RESOLUTION TO APPROVE COMMITMENT TO WINTHROP UNIVERSITY'S TRiO PROGRAM

WHEREAS, Winthrop University was awarded a four-year, $880,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education to implement a TRiO Student Support Services program to serve 160 of Winthrop’s first-generation, low-income, and disabled students; and

WHEREAS, since its inception, Winthrop University’s TRiO program has achieved outstanding results in retaining the students it serves and supporting their consistent academic achievement; and

WHEREAS, Winthrop University is seeking to renew the grant for an additional five-year period; and

WHEREAS, in a highly competitive grant process, the U.S. Department of Education seeks clear demonstrations of ongoing institutional commitment to the success of TRiO programs; and

WHEREAS, the purpose of the Winthrop University Foundation is to support and benefit Winthrop University;

THEREFORE LET IT BE RESOLVED BY THE WINTHROP UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS that the Winthrop University Foundation does hereby commit to a five-year pledge of financial support totaling $25,000; and

LET IT BE FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE WINTHROP UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION BOARD OF DIRECTORS that the sum of $5,000 be donated annually by the Winthrop University Foundation to Winthrop University for five years beginning in 2009 for the express restricted purpose of supporting Winthrop University’s TRiO Student Support Services program.
